Codenames, the digital version of the popular board game, is now available on Android and iOS

  • Inspired by the popular 2015 board game
  • Same mechanics plus different new game modes and updates
  • Available for $4.99 on the App Store and Google Play

Codenames, the popular board game from Czech Games Edition, has finally launched its digital version on mobile devices. The board game, originally released in 2015, quickly became a hit at parties. Now you can enjoy the same entertainment in the palm of your hand without having to carry the game with you. Are you ready to dive into this verbose game of secrets and spies?

If you’ve never played Codenames before, it’s a word association game where two teams battle to contact all their agents before the others. You have a team leader, whose single-word clues must be correctly deciphered to connect all the right words to communicate with your agent. The mobile version does exactly this in an optimized way, so it’s just as fun.

The mobile version works asynchronously with your opponent. You have to connect as many words as possible with a single clue before your opponent becomes victorious. You can play alone or with your friends as you try to outsmart the other secret agents. You have up to 24 hours to play your turn, so you can make moves at your leisure without having to worry about running out of time.

All the original mechanics are of course part of the game, but this digital iteration also comes with some bonus features. A lot of new theme words and gameplay twists have been added. You can take part in different game modes, unlock power-ups and collect achievements as well. There is something for both casual and competitive players.

As you progress through the title, your spy agency will level up and you will earn numerous rewards along the way. The better you become, the more gadgets and word collections you will unlock. Show off your skills and show everyone what it means to be the ultimate spy master.

Codenames is available on the App Store and Google Play for an additional $4.99 or local equivalent. If you want to learn more about the game, check out our Codenames in-depth review.
