There have been a lot of board games that have come to mobile devices, allowing you to play with people around the world instead of your family and friends having to physically come to your house. Codenames was originally a board game, with the same name, that plays quite similarly to the digital version you can now download to your phone.
In Codenames, the concept is simple. There is a grid of cards on your playing field. Some of these cards are for you to find, while others are for your opponent to find. There are a few other cards; some bystanders that are worthless and an assassin, who if either person flips, the entire game is over and that person loses. Your goal is to find the targets you need based on their codenames. These words are on the side of the cards you see and the Games Master will give you a hint as to which words to select, along with the number of cards this clue is intended for.
You can then tap on the cards you think are correct, double-tapping to select them, and then they are turned over so you can see if you are correct. It may seem overly complex, but it is really just a “guess the word that is similar to the word that is given”. Once your turn is over, you can exit that game and move on to another or play some of their daily cases.
In Codenames, you can have a bunch of different games going at once, but this can also be dangerous because you might not remember what previous clues you were given, which can help when you only have a few left. After you beat a few levels, you can also play rounds as the Games Master, however, you cannot choose what role you will have when you start a new round.
Every day (or every few hours) you are also given some case files that you can solve. These are sort of one-shot levels where you have a clue at the bottom of the screen and several cards that you have to select, and then you play them like a normal level.
Codenames is pretty simple to play, taking you through any number of games round by round. As you complete levels or daily missions, you can earn points that level up. This takes it beyond the board game; you’ll find yourself finding items and then having to collect keys to unlock them, or collecting card fragments that create VIP passes, which allow you to enter a special round of the game where you can then earn more points and more premium rewards. There are also trophies you can earn and display. Sometimes when you level up, you’ll have to make a choice between two cards, after watching a short cutscene. These can give you more XP as you progress or otherwise help you play.
This looks like a really engaging adaptation of the board game. I especially like the fact that you can tap on words you don't know so they can be looked up online and I know exactly what they mean, instead of having to admit it in front of my family. Also, if you take too long to play your turn, you'll be removed from that round, so there's no way anyone can just stop playing against you!
